Project 1

If you are following Latin classes, you may have a hand at translating some of the original texts by Copernicus. Discuss these with your teacher.

Here you will find the original pages of the manuscipt De Revolutionibus. On the front page it says in Greek: "Let no one untrained in geometry enter here". You may find it difficult to read Copernicus' handwriting. Then go here:

quadrantProject 2

cross-staff Follow the footsteps of the early astrologists and make observations with the same instruments they used. You will find out how they came to the conclusion that the Earth is the centre of the ‘Heavenly Spheres’. You will finally understand which steps Copernicus needed to make to come to the correct view of the Earth and planets revolving around the Sun. Use this link to Astronomy Without a Telescope for reference (copyright by Nick Strobel).

atrolabe This site explains how to use ancient astronomical instruments like quadrant, cross-staff and astrolabe to determine the positions of stars and planets.
